Nya Svärdet - a modified merchant ship

After the peace treaty of Roskilde in 1658, King Charles X Gustav was not happy. He wanted to crush Denmark and expand the Swedish empire to the west. Therefore, later that year he began a second war against Denmark, which began with the capture of Kronborg Castle in Helsingør.

Nya Svärdet was originally a 40-metre long merchant ship. It was rebuilt, equipped with 30 guns and then took part in several Swedish naval campaigns. In the autumn of 1658, Svärdet was part of the Swedish mobilisation of the fleet around Øresund Sound.

The Dutch did not like the idea of the Swedes taking over both sides of the strait, and anchored just north of Kronborg Castle. On 29 October, the Dutch sailed into Øresund Sound. A number of fierce duels were fought among the largest and strongest ships.

The outcome was a loss for the Swedes, and several ships sought shelter in Landskrona. One of them was Svärdet. On board were not only soldiers and seafarers but wounded crew members from other ships that fought in the battle.

When Svärdet was about to anchor in the inlet to Landskrona, the operation was executed so poorly that the ship instead ran aground and fell on its side. Most of the people on board were rescued by other ships, but many of the wounded who were in the hold could not escape.

The remains of Svärdet today are almost completely covered in sand. Only a few lumps of wood and corroded metal are visible on the bottom.
