Energi
On 21 September 1950, the Swedish steamer Energi was on its way from Luleå to Rotterdam. There were 16 crew members on board. Shortly after 20.00 the ship was shaken by a powerful blast, and after just three minutes the ship sank stern first. Six crew members survived and were rescued by the trawler Johnny from Harö.
Several crew members were convinced that the ship had hit a floating mine. The vessel’s owner also believed that the explosion had been caused by a mine. Commander Gunnar Fogelberg of the Swedish mine forces, on the other hand, considered that the course of events and the damage to the ship did not correspond to a blast caused by a floating mine. Suspicions of sabotage prompted the police to conduct an investigation, which was eventually closed due to lack of evidence.
Both the ship and its cargo were insured, and the shipping company received a total of 770 219 SEK in compensation.
15 years later, the truth surfaces
In 1965, the story again sparked interest through the testimony of a woman who knew some of the men who, in one way or another, had been involved in the sinking. She had fallen out with one of the men and wanted to “unburden her heart”.
So, the police then received some information that would help them unravel the story a bit more. Evidence was found that Johannes Raag, steward on board and one of the survivors, had been in Grythyttan shortly before the incident and bought 20 kilos of dynamite, among other items. In September 1965, the police succeeded in arresting four men – Johannes Raag, the two owners and the machinist Johannes Timmerman.
Men sentenced to 8 years in prison
Raag confessed to his involvement in the attack. Together with a crewman, he had planted the dynamite. They had figured that three kilos of dynamite would be enough since the ship consisted mainly of “rust and paint”, but to be on the safe side they had used eight kilos.
Raag and the owner Arved Mägi were sentenced to eight years in prison.
