At the same time Munin gets trapped in the shallows of Borgsbredan, the steamer Ornö also gets into trouble. As she sails through a lead in the ice, she too becomes trapped.

After being stuck in the ice for an entire night, Ornö is near Utö when dawn breaks. The ice eventually loosens its grip on the ship. But when she gets out into free-flowing waters, a grounded vessel, Munin, is sighted.

The increasing storm-like winds make it risky for Ornö to approach Munin. Throughout the day Ornö sails in a semicircle, back and forth, about half a nautical mile from Munin, waiting for the storm to subside.

The darkness, the mighty waves, the snow flurries and a dim light from Munin cause Ornö to misjudge the distance and get too close to the shallow area, stranding her only 200 metres away from Munin.

When daylight arrives, the crew on board Munin discovers that Ornö is stranded and begins to prepare for a rescue. By nine o'clock, the wind has subsided to the point where one of Munin's lifeboats can be put to sea. With it, Ornö’s entire crew is rescued and boards Munin, which is in lee of the shallow shoals and so fares slightly better against the force of the waves.

Later in the day, the icebreaker Stat arrives on the scene. The two crews make their way over to the icebreaker in their lifeboats. The ships could not be salvaged and were later scrapped on site. Today, parts of the vessels remain at the bottom, including remnants of the boilers.
